the beautiful enshitification of (__) //opinion\\
you know when you see it, read it, hear it.
everything looks and sounds great, but most of it just ain't got soul, damnit. like lab-grown avocadoes.
scrolling through youtube and a trend i've noticed over the past few years is these creators make beautiful videos, constructing a three-part story-arc, and full color-grading... just to make a video about how they use a notebook. or how to cook an egg. etc 1. (i just re-read my last sentence and oh boy do i sound pretentious).
making a 'however' conjecture here, to clear things up: for people in the world who feel inclined to create, i am on the side of "at least they are creating".
i think my chief complaint is that some people see these videos (not me, of course :/) and think, "shit, if i don't have a 4k camera & Scorsese-cinematic-skills, or write like John Steinbeck, or shred like Eddie Van Halen, or blessed with gorgeous face like Margot Robbie, then i can't, (or worse SHOULDN'T) make a video, or write, or make music, or paint, etc.". I want to tell these people (not me, course :/) that that's a wad of malarky. you can make stuff without all of those skills. every great [insert type of profession here] started out as bullshit. just because your video about washing kitchen towels doesn't look like 'apocalypse now' doesn't mean it's not good enough.
conversely i have seen the opposite succeed on youtube. just a person with a camera talking about something. everyone has a phone these days. you don't need much.
some things can be as they are. they don't need to be more beautiful; they just need to be said. so i urge you to say, do, without them being perfect.
this is my opinion, and i reserve full right to change it at any time.
if you read this and think "hey i am one of those people this asshole is talking about, making beautiful videos about nothing!", then all i want to say to you is, i champion you and your creations. but i want to challenge you to use your powers for GOOD. for your life, for your soul. because people need it. it's possible you made your video about making eggs to look like a Sofia Coppola film because you are experimenting and learning, and to that I would say, "i apologize! and then i will say, more power to you! keep on going!"↩
